Thorium. in 2022

laatste update: 10-2022 Thorium is an abundant material which can be transformed into massive quantities of energy. To do so efficiently requires a very different nuclear reactor than the kind we use today- Not one that uses solid fuel rods, but a reactor in which the fuel is kept in a liquid state. Not one that uses pressurized water as a coolant, but a reactor that uses chemically stable molten salts.

Such a reactor is called a “Molten Salt Reactor”. Many different configurations are possible. Some of these configurations can harness Thorium very efficiently.

This video explores the attributes of Molten Salt Reactors. Why are they compelling? And why do many people (including myself) see them as the only economical way of fully harnessing ALL our nuclear fuels… including Thorium.

This video has been under development since 2012. I hope it conveys to you why I personally find Molten Salt Reactors so compelling, as do the many volunteers and supporters who helped create it. Much of the footage was shot by volunteers.

  1. Gord here! I finance travel and video capture and editing with a Patreon campaign. ​ …and if you pledge only $1/year that's still a really big deal to me. I need both social reinforcement (many PEOPLE supporting) as well as actual financial support. So whichever you might have to offer, please do pledge something.

    Quite possibly, for 2020, I won't travel to a single conference. We will see. But I would be perfectly happy working with what I've shot to this point. Frankly, the most important asset I'm missing is not something I could ever get myself… that is laboratory footage. And at this point I expect the footage exists already, shot by everyone doing MSR work. Getting that is a matter of creating a communications piece stakeholders are comfortable letting me slot lab footage into. So if I'm spending any Gord-hours I can simply writing and editing, then I'm not-at-all feeling robbed by Covid-19.

    My communications with ORNL have been quite positive, and in regards to pieces like this. It is crazy-slow, but good. The very best value I could offer MSR advocates is to help ORNL create and release presentations and interviews like this themselves. They do already create educational and promotional pieces, but not at the volume nor specificity we want. ORNL MSRW went from zero public videos from ORNL MSRW 2017, to 3 from ORNL MSRW 2018, and it looks like we will (eventually) get 9 from ORNL MSRW 2019. Maybe 2020 won't happen, but they're aware that MORE is what MSR advocates want. ORNL sure don't need me to do this, except to get the ball rolling and demonstrate demand. If ORNL (and all National Labs doing nuclear R&D) did this themselves, I could gladly become irrelevant to the creation of these basic video assets and focus more on narrative. It is the narrative videos which tend to have a bigger impact. But I can't create narrative pieces without interviews such as these. (And lab footage.)

    Here is something wrong ! Flow of Water is caused by gravity.

  4. Here in India. My family cooks food out of cow dung cause' even natural gas is considered costly when you burn wood and cow dung. One day i'll've a momlten salt reactor in my backyard. The day will come.

  5. Can we please get past the Thorium fanboy rhetoric and advance just a bit to MSR thermal and fast reactor fanboy rhetoric. There is nothing special about thorium, in fact, uranium is much better in a MSR, that's why none of the gen. IV start-ups are using thorium.

  8. Last month a bill was introduced to the Senate to preserve our Uranium stores, investigate China's thorium reactor program and investigate whether the we seeded China's reactor with our Uranium. This topic is still vital.

  9. that guy in the grey hair at 39:00 ids the guy that designed the Light water AND Molten Salt Reactor. He name was Alvin Weinburg and he died in the 20-teens and worked on the manhattan project.

  10. Our current Nukes are fountain pens. Thorium nuclear is a bleeping pencil. Why can't we have a nice pencil? Oh Yeah the government says we can't have NICE things because we might hurt ourselves. 🙁 big time 🙁 GOOTW bureaucracy. I fully expect Musk to load up a thorium reractor for his mars project.

  11. Now I have a new question to research. What was the small nuclear reactor on wheels from Mars Direct? Why not make that the homestead decentralized power structure for earth?

  13. If 4 grams of thorium is enough to power a first world family for year, would it be possible to install a mini reactor in each home ? In cars ? Just drain the salt and replace the thorium once every 12 months !?

  17. One has to ask why were the solar panels mounter horizontally?
    Had they been vertically no dust could cover them.
    If space craft were powered by Man Made Diamond batteries they would last 1500 years, not a few decades.
    Potatoes can be Bandicooted which is what the Bandicoot does, it burrows under the ground and eats potatoes from the roots, the plant does not die, it produces more roots and more potatoes.
    Thorium is found in clay, there is plenty of clay on Mars. Thorium fueled nuclear reactors could automatically be refueled by dust devils.

Instead of replying on diesel powered pumps, had Fukashima had water tower on a nearby hill gravity would have maintained a water supply to the Nuclear Reactor and the accident would not have happened. The Chinese used the US freedom of information laws to gain the information they needed from Oak Ridge National Labority now they are building Thorium fueled Liquid Salt Nuclear Reactors.
